Try Napa Cabbage and make this Fresh Asian Slaw

September 14, 2012 By Denise Costello

I love September !!  Although summer is one  of my favorite times of the year, I enjoy what  September brings  to my life -a  sense of order, and a new beginning.  For me,  it’s the perfect opportunity to create a new intention. – Like-Trying a new vegetable recipe  each week!  How about you ? Do you want to join me in with this intention?

Today it is warm and sunny.  I cherish these opportunities to be on the back patio grilling dinner.

This Asian Slaw is the perfect side dish to add to you cookout. It uses   Napa Cabbage instead of  the regular ol cabbage. I like it,  because it is tender and  more colorful. Plus, a little more interesting to serve your guests.

In addition to it’s culinary appeal here are some of  the health benefits of Nappa Cabbage

  • quick lemon coleslawNapa cabbage is incredibly low in calories. 100 g fresh leaves contain only 16 calories.
  • Napa is packed with many antioxidant plant compounds such as carotenes, thiocyanates, indole-3-carbinol, lutein, zeaxanthin, sulforaphane and isothiocyanates. In addition, it has abundant in soluble and insoluble dietary fiber. Scientific studies suggest these compounds are known to offer protection against breast, colon and prostate cancers and help reduce LDL or “bad cholesterol” levels in the blood.
  • Fresh cabbage is an excellent source of folates.  Sufficient amounts of folates in the diet, especially in the anticipant mothers help prevent neurological diseases in the newborn babies.
  • Further, napa cabbage has very good levels of vitamin-C.  Regular consumption of foods rich in vitamin C helps body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful, pro-inflammatory free radicals.
  • Like in other cabbages, napa has adequate levels of vitamin K.  Vitamin-K has potential role in the bone metabolism by promoting osteotrophic activity in bone cells. Therefore, enough vitamin K in the diet makes your bone stronger, healthier and delay osteoporosis. Further, vitamin-K also has established role in curing Alzheimer’s disease patients by limiting neuronal damage in their brain.

Pretty cool , Napa Cabbage not only tastes great its soo good for the bod!

So, how about it? Are you going to join  me with my new veggi intention? Start this weekend and make the Asian Slaw . You be sure to  WOW your family and guests.

Remember to save the leftovers – it is great to use in a wrap or put in a sandwich with  BBQ pork. yum!
